The second largest district in Bhutan has a population of approximately 28,000 and is located at an altitude of 4,300 feet. The little town is popular for the tales of shaman culture, ornamental speeches or Lozeys of Shaa, ancestral home of Pema Tshewang Tashi, the knight whose lozey still remains a favourite amongst the Bhutanese. The higher reaches of the valley provides rich pastureland for cattle. The district is also known for its fine bamboo work and its slate carvings.

Places of interest around Wangdue Phodrang


Wangduephodrang Dzong

Built in 1638, this was the most visible feature of the district and provided a wonderful view being located on a ridge overlooking the confluence of the rivers Dang Chhu and Punakha Chhu. It was open to visitors during the festival of Wangdue Phodrang Tsechu in Autumn. Unfortunately, it was burnt to the ground in 2012 and plans for renovation are expected to go on till 2021

Wangduephodrang Dzong

The Temple of Sha Radap

Also known as the Rada Lhakhang, this temple is situated close to the site of the district Dzong and is dedicated to and houses the image of the guardian deity of the region known as Sha Radap. Locals often pay a visit to this temple to seek blessings and also go there to name their children. One could roll the dice and receive the blessings hoping to have their wishes come true.

Gasleo and Nahee Village

These villages are located towards the western side of the district and take about 2 hours to reach. It is an ideal option for those looking to have a nice picnic during the daytime and also for those seeking a true perspective into the Bhutanese rural way of life. Autumn, being harvest time is the best time to visit.

Jigme Singye Wangchuk National Park

The Jigme Singye Wangchuk National Park is the largest protected area in Bhutan. It is a haven for those birds who migrate here every year from different parts of the world. Not just birds, it is a treasure trove of animals and plants as well. It is home to exquisite Himalayan animals like the Red Panda, Snow Leopard, Black Bear, Blue Sheep, and Takin. The biodiversity found here is almost overwhelming and attract hundreds of eyeballs every year.

Adha and Rukha Villages

These villages are located to the South of Wangdue town and is a place where one could camp in a tent or better, opt for a homestay at a farmer's house. The farmers are warm and friendly and are happy to engage the visitor in daily activities and in reciting old tales and lores. It is advisable not to visit in the Summer months due to the presence of mosquitoes, leeches and other insects.
