It is one of the oldest temples founded in the 7th century by Songtsen Gampo, a Tibetan King. It is said that, the king was destined to construct a staggering 108 temples in a single day, to suppress a demonic entity in the region and this beautiful temple is one of those 108. . This temple is one of those 108 temples. Guru Rinpoche is believed to visit this destination and considered it a sacred and extremely pious destination.
It was the first palace in Bhutan that was not designed as a fortress but as the principal residence of the first king of Bhutan, Ugyen Wangchuck. The entire administrative body used to move from Wangdicholing to Kuenga Rabten in winter. Later on, it was inherited by Ashi Choeki Wangchuck, an aunt of the fourth king. Now, it is used as a monastic school.
This beautifully smooth terrain with its numerous temples and the apple trees is a sheer delight for the tourists. The visitors who come here can marvel at the scenic Trongsa Dzong that lies on the top of the steep ridge which drops off amidst the clouds in the southern end. It is also regarded often as an overnight destination for travellers heading towards eastern or central Bhutan.
Often regarded as one of the sacred sites of Bhutan, this temple consists of three divisons which are surrounded by 108 Chorten walls. It is not just a sightseeing but also great for pilgrimage. The oldest among the temples was constructed on the rock where Guru Rinpoche is said to have meditated. The second building is also called the Sampa lhundrup temple and houses a colossal statue of Guru Rinpoche.
The Burning Lake, Mebar Tsho is located along the way to the Tang village over the feeder road under Bumthang valley. It takes approximately thirty minutes’ drive to the Mebar Tsho from Chamkhar town. Mebar Tsho is considered one of the most sacred sites in the region as it is related to the renowned religious treasurer (Terton) Terton Pema Lingpa.
